Pittsburgh and Area Home Holiday Safety Tips

With crime on the rise some holiday safety tips are available for Pittsburgh home owners and others who live in the city as well as other areas of the country. The Christmas season is a time when there are a large number of shoppers out and unfortunately so are criminals. Keep your holiday safe by following a few tips to protect your Pittsburgh home, yourself, family, possessions and vehicle safe.

Home Burglaries

  1. Please remember to lock your home and your vehicle. Doors and windows should be secure even if you are only going to be away for a few minutes.
  2. If you have large or expensive gifts in your home, do not place them within sight of a door or a window.
  3. If you are expecting packages and will not be home, make arrangements for a neighbor to keep them for you. If they are left on the doorstep this is an invitation for thieves.
  4. Do not place so many Christmas decorations on your lawn that you cannot see your property. Do not create hiding places.
  5. Never cancel the newspaper that is delivered to your Pittsburgh home, the mail or services in general. This announces that you are away. A neighbor or friend can take care of the home while you are away.

When Shopping Stay Alert

  1. When shopping rather than putting your purchases in the back seat, put them in the trunk where they are out of sight.
  2. Do not carry a large amount of cash.
  3. Lock the car doors and windows when away from the car and when you return check the inside as well as around the vehicle.
  4. Only park in areas that are well-lit.
  5. Walk with confidence and be aware of the people around you.
Identity Theft
  1. Protect your credit cards and checks at all times. Never leave them lying around.
  2. Make a list of all credit card numbers and check information and keep it in a safe place where you can cancel them if the need arises.
  3. Consider direct deposit for check. This provides more security.
  4. Keep receipts and check them for accuracy.
  5. Notify the card issuers or your bank if your items are lost or stolen. Time is of the essence.
